Leatherjacket (Oxymonacanthus  longirostris)                              back     home
leatherjacketThe leatherjacket is an unusual fish in the respect that it has a horn or spike on the top of the head directly over the eye.

This fish is a slow swimmer and is found in rocky areas or protected reefs with heavy marine growth around the coast New Zealand.

The leatherjacket can be in shallow water close inshore and in deeper water upto around 170' or 50 metres deep.

Leatherjackets grow to around 1' or 20-30cm long and weigh about 500 gms.

It's head and body appear to be as one with no large protruding gills, it has a small mouth with exposed teeth. The skin is rough like sand paper much like sharks.

The fish is usually grayish-brown with some obscure darker markings, it has Soft dorsal and anal fins and small pectoral fins.

I beleive that with it's exposed teeth it would eat small animal life such as small crustations, crabs and shellfish.
