Trumpiter (Latris  lineata )                                                                    back     home

Trumpiter The Trumpeter is found south of Cook Strait, and down around the South Island. Though the Trumpiter does exist at several other locations around the Pacific, including the Southern Indian Ocean, Southern Australia, and South America.

The Maori name for this fish is "kohokohi" though is not widely used.

It lives around rocky coastlines down to depths of 40 metres or 130 feet. Though sometimes this species has been noted over clear bottoms down to 200 metres or 650 feet.

It has a large mouth with a protruding snout.

The general colour of this fish would be several shades of olive with flushes of yellow, and there are three or four yellowish brown bands along the upper sides.

It grows up to 140 cm or just over 4 foot in length, and weighs about 25 kg or 55 lbs.

The trumpiter feeds on a wide variety of animal life including molluscs, crustaceans and other fish.

I do not have any information at this time on sex and reproduction.
